An old video showing a confrontation between a Black man and an officer who couldn’t give a logical reason as to why he was following him is going viral again following a senator’s controversial comments that the United States isn’t a racist country.
The man started recording after pulling into a gas station parking spot in the middle of the day, and his video opens on the officer’s car positioned behind him.
“He keep on following me,” he says, approaching the police vehicle. The officer gets out of the car, and the man demands to speak to his supervisor.
“You keep on following me everywhere,” he tells him. “I turn in a grocery store to meet somebody—“
“Oh yeah? To meet somebody?” the officer asks, smirking.
The man demands to know why he’s being watched, and the cop simply claims that it’s because he’s “ducking” him. The officer then asks to see the man’s ID, but he declines, pointing out that he wasn’t pulled over.
Finally, the officer admits that he finds the man “suspicious.”
“I came to get a drink from the gas station!” he protests. “I’m on my way to work.”
The officer finally retreats to his car as the man shouts out to ask if he’s being harassed because he’s Black, but all the cop can seem to say is that he’s “suspicious.”
“I’m suspicious ‘cause I’m Black,” the man tells the camera as the cop car finally pulls away.
The incident took place in Goose Creek, South Carolina, over a year ago. According to a recent post by the Goose Creek Police Department on Twitter, the officer in question was “disciplined for his actions” and no longer works for the department.
The video is now recirculating as one small rebuttal against recent comments by Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.).
“Hear me clearly,” he said on Wednesday, following Joe Biden’s speech to the nation. “America is not a racist country.”
