Distressing new footage shows a man assaulting an elderly Asian woman outside an apartment building while a security guard watches impassively. Two doormen then close the door on the brutalized woman.
The 65-year-old woman was on her way to church on Monday, according to a version of the footage shared on Reddit's r/PublicFreakout. The surveillance video shot from inside the apartment building shows the woman passing the building on the sidewalk. Inside, a security guard sorts through packages.
One of the main doors is open to the outside. As the woman walks past the glass doors, a man plants his foot on her chest and kicks her to the ground. The security guard glances over and watches as the attacker approaches the fallen woman.
The attacker then kicks the woman, who is still sprawled on the sidewalk, in the head several more times. The security guard watches from inside the building, but he does not exit it. Two other men in suits then approach the doors of the apartment building from the inside. Rather than step outside to check on the woman, they unhitch the open door and close it.
Viewers were horrified to see such a brutal attack carried out in broad daylight, as well as the security guard's apparent apathy.
The Reddit video doesn't have sound, but the Redditor who posted it, u/Enigma_101, claims the attacker told the woman, "Fuck you, you don’t belong here," as he assaulted her.
The NYPD seemed to corroborate this in a statement, telling the Daily Dot that the man "made anti-Asian statements" toward the woman after kicking and punching her until she fell to the ground.
The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident. The unit tweeted about the attack last night, sharing several snapshots of the man and encouraging New Yorkers to assist in identifying him.
The NYPD tells the Daily Dot that the woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital in stable condition.
Anti-Asian crimes and harassment have risen sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since last March, anti-Asian hate crimes have rocketed an alarming 149%, according to data collected by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. The majority of hate crimes between March 2020 and March 2021 occurred in New York and Los Angeles.
This new attack also comes less than two weeks after a white man shot and killed eight people—six of whom were Asian and seven of whom were women—across three Atlanta-area spas in a spree that many have deemed a hate crime.
